Brief History – Timeline :
- 1888: Establishment of the Government Printing Office (GPO).
- 1958: GPO relocated to a new building in Elanese St Newtown.
- 1958-1975: Administered by the Australian Government, considered efficient.
- 1998: Government Printer downsized the organization and established a Trust Account as per NEC direction.
- 1999-2016: Staff reduced from 148 to 31, savings totaling over K17 million.
- 2005: GPO moved to new premises in Waigani, Papua New Guinea, equipped with modern technology.
Currently GPO utilizes computer-to-plate technology, high-speed printers, and modern binding equipment. Extended its services to include Provincial LLG, reinstatement of printed legislation, and publication of Provincial and LLG gazettes. And staff are undergoing training in leading-edge technology and general up-skilling programs. Capacity building programs are in place.

The Government Printing Office statutory functions and responsibilities stipulated under various legislations, (The Printing Law 333, The Evidence Act Chapter 46, The Interpretation Act Chapter 2, The National Constitution Section 252 and The Public Finance Management Act No. 212 of 1995,Section 117), has mandatory obligations to deliver effective and efficient quality printing and publishing products and services to the Legislature, the Judicial, the Executive Arms of Government, the Public Service and State Agencies.
